Good News for Patients with Osteonecrosis of the Femoral Head — the "Chunli Sunshine Program" Implemented at Nanyang Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine

“I never expected that the material fees for my hospitalization this time would be waived by more than 20,000 yuan. On behalf of my family, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the China Charity Federation, Beijing Chunli Medical Co., Ltd., the leaders of Nanyang Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Director Huang Yonghua of the First Department of Orthopedics, and my attending physician Li Shuliang.” This is what Sha, a resident of Chengguan Town, Zhenping County, said excitedly to Director Huang Yonghua of the First Department of Orthopedics of our hospital upon his discharge.

The patient's family sent a letter of thanks
Mr. Sha has suffered from diabetes for more than 20 years and has subsequently developed a series of complications including uremia, cerebral infarction, diabetic foot, hypertension and coronary heart disease. Plagued by chronic illnesses and poor health year-round, the annual medical expenses have become a heavy financial burden on his family.

In surgery
Three years ago, Mr. Sha began to suffer from pain in his right thigh accompanied by restricted mobility. Due to his family’s financial hardship, he did not seek medical treatment at a hospital. Over the past six months, the pain has worsened, leaving him unable to walk normally and severely affecting his daily life. He then visited Nanyang Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine on reputation and consulted Director Huang Yonghua of the First Department of Orthopedics. After a thorough examination, Director Huang diagnosed him with right avascular necrosis of the femoral head. However, given his long disease history and severe symptoms, he required a total hip arthroplasty, which would incur substantial medical expenses. This would add insult to injury for his already impoverished family, leaving his loved ones distraught and considering abandoning treatment. Upon learning about Mr. Sha’s family circumstances, Director Huang immediately reported the situation to the hospital’s leadership and actively contacted and consulted with the administrators of the Chunli Sunshine Program. The Chunli Sunshine Program initiated by the China Charity Federation was thus activated promptly — Nanyang Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine is the only designated hospital for this program in Henan Province.

The patient submitted a written application in person, and the governments at both town and village levels issued a certificate of family poverty. With the joint efforts of the hospital leaders and Director Huang, Mr. Sha was fortunate enough to become a beneficiary of the program. Over 20,000 yuan worth of material fees were waived for him. He successfully underwent total hip arthroplasty for right avascular necrosis of the femoral head on December 30, 2020. The surgery was a complete success, and he has achieved a favorable postoperative recovery.

Spring Sunshine Project
The "Chunli Sunshine Program" of the China Charity Federation was launched in August 2009 with the support of Beijing Chunli Zhengda Medical Instrument Co., Ltd. Each year, Chunli Medical donates artificial joint products worth over 1 million yuan to the China Charity Federation, providing free internal fixation materials required for artificial joint replacement surgeries to impoverished patients with severe joint diseases who have passed strict certification, and helping them alleviate the burden of substantial surgical expenses.

Spring Sunshine Project
The program selects hospitals with high-level and experienced joint replacement expertise nationwide as designated medical institutions for the initiative. It aims to provide favorable orthopedic surgical conditions for more impoverished patients, ensuring that while receiving artificial joint assistance, these patients can also access high-quality surgical treatment.
Since the "Chunli Sunshine Program" was launched at Nanyang Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine in April 2019, it has successively assisted many impoverished patients with orthopedic conditions, helping them rid of physical pain, restore bodily functions and reintegrate into society.
