Recently, the Second Orthopaedic Ward of the Municipal People's Hospital, leveraging its exquisite medical expertise, helped a 65-year-old impoverished patient through the Chunli Sunshine Program, enabling Ms. Hui to straighten her knees which had been bent for 10 years and resume normal walking.
Hailing from Yanchuan, Ms. Hui has suffered from bilateral knee pain for more than 20 years. The condition gradually worsened, accompanied by joint deformity and mobility impairment. Over the past decade, it has severely compromised her quality of life, rendering her unable to take care of herself and struggling to walk. She had sought medical treatment at multiple other hospitals on several occasions, yet was deterred each time by the prohibitive cost of treatment, and had to endure the pain in silence.
A few days ago, when Ms. Hui learned that Yan'an People's Hospital could provide free artificial joint replacement for impoverished patients through the Chunli Sunshine Program, she went to the Second Orthopaedic Ward of the hospital to consult with Director Zhang Wensheng. Struck by Ms. Hui’s agonizing living conditions, Director Zhang prioritized her urgent needs, immediately organized the department staff to conduct thorough discussions and detailed investigations. Upon confirming her genuine financial hardship, he reported the situation to the hospital leadership. The hospital president gave his full support and instructed the Second Orthopaedic Ward to make active coordination, so as to provide assistance to the patient via the Chunli Sunshine Program. With the full participation and meticulous preparations of all staff in the ward, a bilateral knee arthroplasty was successfully performed on the patient on May 27, with a smooth postoperative recovery.
It is understood that the Chunli Sunshine Program is a poverty alleviation initiative launched by the China Charity Federation, undertaken by Beijing Chunli Medical Instrument Co., Ltd., managed by Shaanxi Zhonghui Medical Instrument Co., Ltd., and implemented by Yan'an People's Hospital. The program provides artificial joint subsidies for impoverished patients in Yan'an. Since its official launch at Yan'an People's Hospital in 2015, it has benefited 4 patients, providing 5 free artificial joints with a total value of RMB 156,000, significantly improving the quality of life of the subsidized patients.
